The FestungsBahn funicular guarantees a comfortable ride up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg, the city's iconic landmark. Wonderful views are always included.
Fortress Hohensalzburg is one of the biggest castles in Europe and dates back to the 11th century. The FestungsBahn is Austria’s oldest funicular still in operation today. It has been carrying visitors up to the fortress quickly and safely since 1892.
The last modernization took place in 2011. Around 4 million Euros were invested in two new vehicles and the renewal of the electrical equipment.
The funicular transports up to 55 passengers at a time every 10 minutes. The ride starts at the valley station which is located in the middle of the old town (Festungsgasse 4). It takes less than a minute to get up to 536 m.
During the ride up, passengers can enjoy breathtaking views across UNESCO World Heritage-listed Salzburg. And once at the top, the view is simply magical.
The FestungsBahn takes you up to the castle hilltop (so called Festungsberg) in less than a minute. It runs every 10 minutes. Buy tickets online.
