The FestungsBahn funicular, WasserSpiegel museum and MönchsbergAufzug lift transform the Mönchsberg, Salzburg’s city mountain, into an unexpected mountain adventure.
The extended ridgeline of the Mönchsberg, with its forests and meadows, conceals an abundance of natural and cultural treasures which can be discovered during a walk. The Stefan Zweig Centre is located on the Mönchsberg, as is the inviting Stadtalm, the Museum der Moderne, the WasserSpiegel, a Buddhist stupa, the Pallottine Monastery, the Richterhöhe, a five-star luxury hotel, a small street kiosk, bouldering rocks, along with hidden pathways and stone-strewn trails. Up here, the city seems quite remote, compensated for by fantastic mountain views of the Tennengebirge, Göll and Watzmann.
Ride up with FestungsBahn funicular
The FestungsBahn, in the middle of the Salzburg historic district, is the promise of true happiness: In a matter of seconds, it carries passengers up to Fortress Hohensalzburg and the top of popular Mönchsberg mountain. This green oasis in the city surprises with numerous sightseeing attractions and natural treasures.
Visit at WasserSpiegel museum
If you leave the FestungsBahn at the middle station or the Hohensalzburg Fortress via the footpath, you come to an idyllic footpath that leads to the interactive WasserSpiegel museum within a few minutes. The location for this exhibition wasn’t chosen by chance. In fact, there are very concrete reasons: It was here on the Mönchsberg, close to the historic Richterhöhe, that an imposing mountain reservoir for drinking water was constructed in 1950. It can hold up to 25 million liters of drinking water, is 8.5 m deep and is today part of the Water Museum.
Ride down on MönchsbergAufzug lift
Once you have reached the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, an architecturally intriguing building in its own right, you might wish to treat yourself to a bite to eat at gourmet restaurant m32 or explore the museum and its astonishing collections. TIP: From the amazing panorama terrace, you are treated to a one-of-a-kind perspective of the Salzburg historic district, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO back in 1997. After the excursion on Mönchsberg, the MönchsbergAufzug lift brings its guests back to Salzburg's old town in just 30 seconds.
